I've eaten my way through 20 countries. Nepal's food scene is wildly underrated — and this tour proved it.
The Momo Master
Our first stop was a tiny hole-in-the-wall in Ason that's been making momos for three generations. The buff (buffalo) momos with tomato achaar were the best I've ever had — and I say this as someone who's eaten momos in every city from Delhi to Darjeeling.
Newari Feast: Chatamari & Yomari
The Newari cuisine was a revelation. Chatamari — often called 'Nepali pizza' — is a crispy rice-flour crepe topped with minced meat and egg. Yomari, a sweet steamed dumpling, was filled with molasses and sesame. Textures and flavors I'd never encountered before.
The Sweet Finish: Juju Dhau
We ended in Bhaktapur with the legendary Juju Dhau — 'king of yogurt.' Served in small clay pots, this cream-top yogurt is sweet, tangy, and impossibly smooth. I bought six pots to take home and they didn't survive the taxi ride.
More Than Just Food
What made this more than a food tour was the storytelling. Every dish came with history — the Rana-era origins, the Newari festival connections, the family recipes. Our guide was a walking encyclopedia of Kathmandu's culinary DNA.
