I only had one day in Kathmandu before my flight. Best single day I've ever spent traveling.
Swayambhunath: The Monkey Temple
We started at dawn at Swayambhunath. Climbing 365 steps with monkeys leaping overhead while the eyes of Buddha watched from every direction — it was surreal. Our guide explained the symbolism of the 13 golden rings representing the path to enlightenment.
Patan Durbar Square: Living History
The Newari architecture at Patan was phenomenal. Intricately carved wooden windows centuries old, temples that survived multiple earthquakes, and local artisans still practicing metalwork traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Boudhanath: Where Time Stops
The massive white dome of Boudhanath Stupa, circled by Tibetan refugees spinning prayer wheels — this was the spiritual heart of my trip. We sat at a rooftop cafe, sipping butter tea, watching the kora (circumambulation) below. Pure peace.
The Hidden Courtyards
What made this special was what the regular tourist misses. Our guide took us through hidden Newari bahals (courtyards) — ancient communal spaces with 500-year-old stone sculptures, still used daily by local families. That level of living heritage is rare in the world.
Photos from the trip
“Don't skip Kathmandu thinking it's 'just a stopover city.' With the right guide, it's one of the most culturally rich experiences in Asia. Visualize Nepal made one day feel like a week.”
